Up for a coffee with... Lisa & Sebastian
An exciting event recently took place in our hometown of Augsburg: the Hackerkiste. This event, which combines elements of a conference, a bar camp and a hackathon, attracted many professionals from the digital world, including our talents from meteocontrol, including UX designers Lisa and Sebastian. It also offers workshops on topics such as the web, IoT, security, and everything in between. Our two UX designers even gave a presentation. Over coffee, they filled us in on what UX designers do, and what impressions they gained from the event.
mc: Hi you two, you just got back from the hack. What did you think of the event and what were the takeaways?
Sebastian: It was a super event for the IT industry in Augsburg, with lots of exciting and inspiring presentations!
Lisa: I agree. It was the perfect opportunity to catch up on development topics, gather impressions, and exchange ideas outside your own profession. Our presentation "Underestimated release notes - how users find out about new features", we aimed to provide insight into a topic we deal with on a monthly basis: we want to show users the latest updates to the web portal so that they can enjoy them as right away.
mc: Can you describe your job as a UX designer in one sentence?
Lisa: Contrary to the prejudice that "UX/UI design only makes things look nice", we actually strive to create the most user-friendly experience. This allows our users to spend more time solving complex problems instead of dealing with a frustrating application.
mc: How did you come to mc? What’s your professional background?
Sebastian: After my studies at TUM, I first worked in the automotive industry. I’ve now been with meteocontrol since January 2020.
Lisa: With my master's degree in information design, I went straight into work at an agency in Munich. I particularly enjoyed working with customers from the energy and education sectors. After almost five years, I decided to change my perspective and focus on UX/UI design in the field of renewable energy - and meteocontrol turned out to be just the right address for that.
mc: What do you like about working at mc?
Lisa: In contrast to everyday agency life, at mc you can dedicate yourself to one topic and dive deeper and deeper. This creates concepts and ideas that can be discussed with different departments at any time - everyone has an amazing amount of knowledge to share, which fuels the design process immensely! The direct line of communication to development also has a direct influence: I can directly discuss the feasibility of an idea or exchange information on previous functionalities in the portal - this saves time for everyone involved.
Sebastian: Same for me. The flat hierarchies and the close exchange with other departments make it possible to react very quickly to challenges, trends and customer requests.
mc: Our industry is constantly evolving - likely now more than ever. How can you as UX designers, and we as mc make a difference?
Sebastian: By developing products for and, above all, with our customers! After all, they’re the real experts, since they work with our products every day, know the industry and have to react to the same trends as we do. Of course, they’re also happy when we surprise them with great innovations on top of that.
Lisa: When you realize that our users work with our products every day, you're happy to go the extra mile to ensure a smooth user experience. Currently, industry awareness of UX/UI design has a long way to go. But we’re sure that in the future, we’ll be able to strengthen the relevance of UX/UI and move forward - true to our mc motto "Think ahead".
mc: What are you working on right now?
Lisa: For our monthly release notes, I just created a visualization for all the information about our newest feature – the power control dashboard, which I helped to design. At the same time, we’re working on expanding our product range to provide an all-inclusive service package for customers. To do this, a unified UX and UI are indispensable: the challenge is to synchronize our design language even more to create an all-encompassing foundation for all of our products.
Sebastian: I'm still putting the finishing touches on our new automation module. This will enable our customers to automate time-consuming manual tasks in the future and make their day-to-day work even more efficient.
mc: Cool, that sounds exciting. Then we wish you continued happy work. Thanks for your insights!
